First, to eliminate unemployment helps to maintain social stability, which is a prerequisite for prosperity and development of a country. If the jobless, who have no stable income source, are not well placed, they are likely to take risks and commit various crimes at the end of their rope. Just like an old saying goes, “The devil makes work for idle hands.” Thus, faced with increasing crimes, without safety and stability, a lack of jobs can shake the nation to its very foundations and no strong economy can be built on. Second, to provide more jobs generates market vitality. Having jobs ensures millions of job seekers more disposable income, and leads to a stronger purchasing power, which encourages greater domestic consumption. Thereupon, various industries will be stimulated and propelled. Take the car industry as an example, an increasing number of people, with the accruing wealth, will purchase private cars to commute to their work place. As a result, the automobile industry will experience a booming period. The same logic can also be true to other industries and fields, so the whole nation will usher in an era of prosperity in the end. Cheaper food and housing are seemingly effective; however, these two practices would hinder economic development in the long run. The low price of food will harm the benefit of food producers and affect the agricultural industry; and an increasing housing affordability may put a damper on citizens’ passion for creating wealth and thus decrease the dynamics of the whole society. That is to say, when the price is so cheap that nearly everyone can easily afford it, no one will work hard. Lao Tsu once said, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” As for today, give a man money is no better than giving a man a job to make money.
