Performance appraisal is essential for building an atmosphere of excellence. For teachers, it benefits both individuals as well as organizations, in that it provides feedbacks on improvement and allows management personnel to establish guidelines for wage hikes and promotion. When it comes to the methods of conducting teacher evaluation, a heated debate has arisen among the public about who should conduct the evaluation: students or teachers. As far as I am concerned, I believed that to evaluate teachers’ performance by students is more useful. My opinions will be elaborated as below.
To begin with, to evaluate teaching performance by students is more effective. Students are the ones who stay with teachers for the most of time in a day, and also who are influenced by the teaching quality most directly. So they are the ultimate insiders of a course and have the biggest voice to judge whether an instructor has done a good job or not. Besides, the anonymous summative survey at the end of term provides an opportunity for students to express their real perceptions of the teachers and courses, which are not usually revealed. In this way, teachers can adjust their teaching plans or approaches to better meet students’ needs based on critically analyzing students’ comments. Take my major course instructor as an example. He receives Outstanding Teaching Staff Award every year, to which the most well-known “secret” is that he values every piece of comment from his students. I once suggested that he could add more diverse teaching activities in class, and the next semester, he did add many different and interesting activities such as debate and drama in his English Literature course, which greatly increased my learning motivation and other students’ enjoyment. At last, this course was rated as one of the best courses in our faculty.
In addition, evaluation from students is more objective. We all know that big database ensures the objectivity and reliability of a conclusion. There are always more students than teachers in a campus, thus evaluations from students are more comprehensive than those form teachers. Moreover, personal relationships make it more difficult for teachers to grade their colleagues accurately. Another concern is that the rewards might trigger competition and inauthentic evaluation, which lead to unfairness and the failure of reliable evaluation. Don’t test humanity, and don’t incentivize the negative ones.
Admittedly, teachers can offer some comments and suggestions from a professional perspective, but they may be too busy to spare extra time for classroom observation. On the other hand, it is rather convenient and efficient for students to grade their own teachers.
To put it in a nutshell, evaluating teaching performance by students can not only ensure the effectiveness of the evaluation, but also avoid unnecessary negative washback of the assessment.
